Strachan's boasts some incredibly good ice cream, particularly the carrot cake. Unfortunately the cones are pretty subpar and took away from the awesomeness. This is the kind of place I recommend as a chubby kid at heart, but I would suggest a bowl of icecream rather than cone. PS... I can't stress enough how awesome the carrot cake was.

I am giving this one star because they don't accept credit or debit cards and by the time you pay for the ATM (which they also get paid on) my 2 scoops of ice cream easily cost $9. This is outrageous, I have been to only one other place that doesn't take credit or debit and that is delcos and they don't screw you even more by having an ATM in the place. I will never go back. In this day and age you should not be in business if you can't take a credit or debit card.

I appreciate ma and pop ice cream shops just as much as the next guy so couldn't wait to try this place out. Unfortunately, it didn't hold up to the standards I expected. They have a decent selection of ice cream but none of them really wowed me. Also, the scoop size you'll get varies substantially based on who serves you. We had 3 people in our party, and even though we all ordered different sizes, we all got the same amount of ice cream. They should be more consistent. There are other ice cream places in the area that are much better. Will likely not return.

They don't have that many flavors, and some of the flavors are boring or lacking in ingredients. But the ice cream is fresh. And just for that they get 4 stars from me. Faves: mint oreo I just wish that when they make an ice cream like mint oreo or chocolate chip, that they were not that miserly with the ingredients. Just put some more oreos in the damn oreo ice cream, for crying out loud!

So yummy. Décor not so lovely, but you will love the ice cream.

Okay, so I was cruising down Alt.19 (parallel to the Pinellas Trail) heading back from the NPR. It was dark outside in the 727, and I had this urge for a good hot fudge sundae. I'm thinking to myself: "It's January. Ice cream in January? But heck, I'm in warm Florida and not in cold & snowy New Hampshire freezing my tail off! I can have my sundae outside!" I decided to stop at Strachan's Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts (a family owned business), which was voted "Best of Tampa Bay" by Tampa Bay Magazine 4 years in a row. This place has the atmosphere of an old fashioned ice cream parlor, which serves up the typical ice cream treats including their homemade hard ice cream (around 35 flavors offered), cones, sundaes, banana splits, shakes, floats, ice cream sodas, & Bostons, smoothies slushes, sno cones, frozen chocolate bananas, cobblers, and cold beverages. They also sell homemade fudge (see the front display case), Key lime pies, carrot cake, ice cream cakes, cheesecakes, and hand packed ice cream. Check out the selection in the cooler. Also, check out their website for the low down strachansdesserts.com As soon as I entered the parlor, I was cheerfully greeted by two young ladies working here, who explained the menu and ice cream flavors and I ordered a Small Hot Fudge Sundae ($3.59 plus tax) with pumpkin pie ice cream, topped with gooey thick hot fudge, whipped cream, crushed nuts, & cherry. The sundae was sooo good and pumpkin pie ice cream was very refreshing, creamy and not too rich. I did manage to get some of the crushed nuts stuck in my teeth. :-) I would've ordered more ice cream, but I already had dinner plans at Bellni (see Review 602), a few miles away. Dessert before dinner, I love it!!! Overall, great tasting hard ice cream and very friendly service at Strachan's. NOTES: Cash only. ATM available inside. No seating inside, but there's picnic table seating outside. HOURS: Open 12PM to 9PM daily. LOCATION: Corner of Alt. 19 and Tampa Rd., access via Tampa Rd & Dempsey Rd in back, gravel parking lot.

words just cant describe the flavors here. The Almond Joy, the pistachio almond, and the Cherry/walnut/chocolate chip were excellent!!! Small shop with very few places to sit but the staff was very hospitable and polite. You can sample as much as you like and the have a secret sauce they can add as a topping that is out of this world. Highly recommended!!!

Friendly, helpful, clean, attentive, yummy :) The girl's attitude was so helpful and cheery. She informed us that there were more flavors of ice cream than in the front counter and directed us to the board with the list. My sin chose one from the list but they were out of it. That annoyed me because she could have easily removed that magnet, in fact I almost took it off to hand to her, to let her know it was false advertising. But maybe they leave it up there so patrons will know they usually have quite the variety in hopes we will come back to try again. Oh well. She gave heaping scoops and let the kids get two kinds in their small cones. I also got some fudge, delicious; and some peanut butter pie, rich. She did not mind me coming back in for napkins and got some wet for me. (We were sitting out front under the umbrella but ice cream melts in kid hands in Florida in July. I saw a sink and figured I could just let the kids wash off. She kindly redirected us to the bathroom. Ok. I like the staff. Good job interviewing and training :)

If you're craving ice cream and you want it local, this is about as local as it gets. It really is fresh and homemade, but I'm a little too picky about my ice cream to find what I want here. Definitely some interesting picks, and they've got a dairy-free sorbet, so try it out this summer! I did a scoop of the black cherry and a mounds bar concoction. They give some pretty hefty servings, so start with a single scoop first. Even though I'm not IN LOVE with this place, I will probably go back some time and try their famous carrot cake from the freezer case!

This little ice cream shop is so cute! My friends and I stopped in to grab some pre-dinner dessert a week or so ago and loved the ice cream! A couple of highlights: Sample what you want - the girls behind the counter were super friendly and not bothered at all when we sampled our hearts out to make a decision. Cash only! Not too much of an issue since there's an ATM inside the little shop. Apparently they make an amazing carrot cake so next time I'm in the area I'll be sure to try it out :)

My family and I visit this and the Dunedin location often. We LOVE the ice cream here, although it's a tad bit pricey, it's worth it. This review is based on customer service from my most recent visit at the Palm Harbor location. We went inside, waited in line for a few minutes and as we got to the counter I began to ask the girl who was working a question about the flavor of soft serve that was listed on the menu. Before I even finished my sentence she rudely cut me off saying "we don't have soft serve today." I said OK and then ordered my daughters cone of smurf ice cream, I asked for a cup of vanilla with yummy yummy sauce for myself, she then replied with "we don't have yummy yummy sauce today." I asked if she could still make a malt milkshake even though they were out of soft serve and she told me she could but there's an up charge... I asked if I seriously had to pay an up charge after I've been told they are out of everything I've asked for and her response was "Yep!" Accompanied by an eye roll... Seriously?! I paid for my daughters ice cream and left to get something for myself elsewhere. Don't go here expecting to be accommodated. I will not be returning to the Palm Harbor location anytime soon, and will be taking my money elsewhere. Maybe the company should rethink hiring all these miserable teenagers who hate their jobs, and it would be a more pleasant environment!

I don't mind paying $7 - $8 for a couple scoops of ice cream but it needs to wow me. I do not think this place makes the best ice cream. I can easily go to whole foods and buy myself a nice tub of ice cream for the same price, which tastes better too! I like supporting family owned businesses but not when they lack customer service! I guess the only positive thing I can say about this place is that you can purchase an ice cream cone for your puppy. They do have outdoor seating for those who want their ice cream to melt within five minutes, due to the ridiculous Florida heat and humidity. If you and you're family are in the mood to spend money on going out for ice cream, then by all mean try this place out. If you would rather pay the same price for way more ice cream that tastes better too, then you're safest bet would be to purchase a couple of tubs from your local grocer!

This place is anything but "Homemade" Their ice creams are all filled with unnatural ingredients and a base out of a can filled with gluten, artificial flavorings and nasty preservatives. Even their "all Natural" gluten free yogurt is filled with junk!!! Not worth it!! You are better off to buy some Breyers from the grocery store and enjoy at home, tastes better and is more natural than anything they sell here!! Very deceiving place!!

The stopped selling the best thing in the store - the Only 8 soft serve!! Boo! Now they only have one no sugar added flavor for diabetics and no non-dairy ice cream like the Only 8 was.

2nd day in a row! Delicious ice cream - we tried regular scoops, milkshakes and sundaes. Everyone was happy with their choices. Didn't get a chance to try the yummy yummy sauce. I was told to get it with vanilla soft serve and whipped cream. Maybe next time. The cake looked good but I was sticking to ice cream.

Yup, this place is legit. Very few icecream shops make their own stuff these days. I think the only one I know of off hand is Candy Kitchen in Madeira, actually. So I was really surprised to find this place. We passed it quite by accident on the way to grub at the Thirsty Marlin, so we saved some room in our guts and hit it up 5 minutes before closing. I grabbed two scoops of Pralines and Cream and it was simply too much for me to handle. Delicious, rich and freakin' PLENTY. When they say two scoops, they mean two baseball-sized scoops, so be aware of what you're getting into. It's a serious commitment.

I don't normally eat ice cream, but when I do, it's homemade, and too much! Sure it might seem expensive if you have your fifty little ones in tow, but this place is perfect for couples looking for the good stuff. Reserve the prepackaged manufactured push pops for the kids! This place has homemade carrot cake, homemade hand dipped waffle cones with sprinkles, nuts, and inventive ice cream flavors. I had the Cherry Wowza, and Wowza for real, because it was great. Huge chunks of marachino cherries protruded at every lick. Crunchy walnuts added texture, and the smooth cherry ice cream held the scoops together as they teetered dangerously overstuffed from a choco nut waffle cone. I couldn't spare the stomach space or time after a large meal, but it was a great dessert, and I'll certainly be back for a much smaller portion next time!

I moved to Palm Harbor 2weeks ago and just stumbled upon this place. Some of the BEST ice cream I have tasted, and that's saying a lot. I lived in Columbus OH for a few years and got spoiled with Jeni's :-) Definitely returning after trying the carrot cake ice cream!

I love this place...you walk in and smell waffle cones :). There is not a lot of variety out front but usually you can find something yummy..and they let you sample ;-). They have started accepting credit cards which is great! The carrot cake is good too.

Decided to stop In for an ice cream craving today for the first time. I went with the Cherry Wowza which was pretty good, but it wasn't great. It had little chocolate chips, maraschino cherries, and walnuts which I love:-) I paid $3.75 for a very small cone and one small scoop. Pretty pricey for what u get. U can go to Cold Stone and get a much bigger and more impressive ice cream for that price. I wouldn't say that I won't ever go in again if I'm in the area, but I won't be saying... I must have some Strachan's when ice cream cravings strike me.

Dropped in here with 7 people in our group. Got the key lime pie frozen. It is basically a cream cheese based key lime pie. Carrot cake which was good. Coffee ice cream had a nice strong coffee flavor. Hot fudge brownie sundae was good too. Key lime ice cream was flavorless and icy. Quality wise it was 3 stars. It received 2 stars overall because the servers were worth 1 star. Very rushed unfriendly service. We felt we were a bother to them even after spending over $30.

I'm a fan of traditional banana splits and i have had them all over the US. This location with their homemade ice cream will amaze you. A must see, and I will be back again. This location takes debit cards.

This shop has pretty good ice cream, we have tried many flavors....but I think the mint choc chip and the peanut butter cup are two of my favorites. If you want to eat outside the box the choc dipped key lime pie on a stick might be their best item!! I'm pretty tough on ice cream shops, and this has average customer service, portions and pricing are decent.

  • Kelleigh M.

I'm not giving them 5 stars because $7.50 for 2 small ice creams is a bit much. We stopped here on the way back from the beach and I had the cinnamon ice cream (very good) and my husband had the pralines and cream (a little too sweet for me). I was going to get a slice of carrot cake to go but for $6 a small slice didn't seem practical. This place had been here for years, and it's cash only. It's a no frills ice cream shop that delivers a great product, it's just a tad too expensive.

We stopped for ice cream only. It was nothing special and overpriced. They do have some unique favors, but the taste was nothing like I expected. I expected more, but I am used to Graeter's ice cream in Cincy. Also, the staff was not friendly, which takes away any good things. It is cash only.

On my last visit here, I was hoping to check out the newer location. It wasn't happening so here we go. I came searching for some good mint chocolate chip ice cream. Well, in terms of flavor, I found it at Strachan's. It was a nice balance of mint and sweet. Of course, to please me, it was more on the chocolatey side of the balance. But hey! I'll take it! The disappointment: Well the ice cream wasn't very easy to eat with the plastic spoons they give you. I felt like the spoon was going to break with every bite I took. Either the ice cream is hard or the spoons just plain suck. I'm a sucker for sweets so I'll blame the spoons there. Bring your own metal spoon! Perhaps, one that isn't going to bend easily, it'll make the experience more pleasurable in the sense that you'd eliminate any worries about losing your utensil. Also, CASH ONLY! Sure, they have an ATM inside, but if you want your ice cream, better cough up the paper.

Summer time and the living is easy, Nothing beats a good scoop of ice cream on a hot June evening. The kids that work here probably would rather be doing something else, and I can't say I blame them, but they do a good job. always appear friendly and neat. Admittedly, this is an indulgence, as $10 for 2 ice cream cones is a tad bit expensive, but the flavours are usually good, and they'll give you a free sample if it's a flavour you're unsure of.

Probably the best ice cream I ever had. Homemade ice cream and desserts - though I never tried their desserts, they look incredible. Diabetics beware! The pumpkin pie ice cream is my personal favorite. Cash only. Also, the owners run an ice cream school - where they teach you how to make ice cream and operate your own store... And they just opened a second store on Main Street in Dunedin.

Ok, I guess hype got to me. I expected the ice cream to be just amazing and unique and different based on the reviews. However, when I tasted it, I was not at all bowled over. It is good and you can tell there is more butter in this than normal ice cream. However, the ice cream is so so in my opinion. It is a beautiful little shop and typically it is packed. I will likely go to it again to try something different and improve my opinion. I got the coffee orea cookie ice cream and it was a bit too overwhelming in the coffee department. Good summer place to get some ice cream and people watch.

WoW!!!! What an amazing place to get some ice cream. This is a place that I will be going back to more often. We are in the area on our honeymoon, and I already can't wait to go back tomorrow! So many awesome choices to choose from. I played it safe the first time and got a medium cup of coffee ice cream with Reese's cups on top......sooo good
